First Snow at Devil's Backbone

from $74.00

This was my first time visiting the Devil’s Backbone in Loveland, Colorado. I hadn’t seen many photographs from this area, but I knew it was a popular hiking trail, so I went in with no real expectations. A light snow had fallen the night before, and when I pulled into the empty parking lot at sunrise, the whole place felt quiet and untouched.

The only problem was the light. A thick layer of clouds sat on the horizon, blocking any chance of a sunrise. I started hiking anyway, moving along the ridge and studying different compositions of the rock formation. Eventually I found a composition that felt right, even if the light was going nowhere. But as I setup my tripod, a gap opened in the clouds and sunlight poured across the landscape. I had only a few seconds before the clouds swallowed the sun again, so I worked fast and captured what I could before the scene went flat.

It was one of those common Colorado moments where a little bit of patience goes a long way. A new place, unexpected conditions, and a fleeting burst of perfect light. I’m already looking forward to getting back out there again.
