Indian Peaks Winter Sunrise

from $74.00

It was the morning after a snowstorm and I wanted to get up into the high country to make some new winter images. I don't remember exactly what time I left, but sunrise in February is around 6:30, so it was an early wake-up call. It takes a little longer than an hour to drive from my house in Denver, through Boulder and up to the Brainard Lake winter lot, and from there, I had to put on my snowshoes and start breaking trail through the forest.

I reached Red Rock Lake just before sunrise and found that the storm had loaded the spruce along the shoreline, snow settled deep into the branches and clinging to every limb. There was more snow on the lake itself than I had expected, enough that it appeared more like a meadow than a frozen lake.

I setup up my tripod just as the sun came up from behind. The first light cast a pink glow on the peaks, the way it always does when you're facing west at sunrise. Fog hung over the Continental Divide, scattering the first light across the ridge. This perfect scene only lasted for a few minutes before the color faded and the morning turned ordinary, but that's most of what a winter sunrise is up here: a long drive, a trudge through the snow, and a brief moment where everything is sublime.
