Sunset at San Luis Lake

from $75.00

I had driven past the sign for San Luis Lake more times than I can count on trips down to the Great Sand Dunes, and on a March trip to the valley I finally turned in and spent an evening photographing it. The lake sits on the floor of the San Luis Valley in Alamosa County, and the main attraction is the view east. When the sun drops, the light runs all the way across the valley and bathes the Sangre de Cristos in gold and then crimson, which is where the range gets its name — Spanish for "the blood of Christ."

This was a state park until 2016, when Colorado Parks and Wildlife closed it after years of drought dropped the lake too low to support boating and camping, and turned it into a state wildlife area. It's quieter now, and it takes some effort to walk down to the shoreline. That winter was warm and dry with very little snow in the mountains, which you can see in how bare the peaks are for March.
