Ute Pass Winter Light
2025 marked the final year before my grandparents sold their home in Silverthorne, Colorado, which was something that was deeply bittersweet for me. Not only was their house beautiful and on a gorgeous property, it gave me easy access to a stretch of Colorado Highway 9 and Ute Pass Road, both of which offer incredible vistas of the Gore Range.
Whenever my family traveled up to Silverthorne for ski weekends, I always made it a priority to get up before sunrise, slip out with my camera gear, and head north on Highway 9. Winter photography in this area is something truly special as the jagged peaks of the Gore Range shine under fresh snow. Accessing these mountains up close would require backcountry ski equipment and avalanche training, but from the vantage point of Ute Pass, you could still witness the range’s winter beauty.
One of my favorite spots was near the top of Ute Pass, where you could look out over the eastern face of the Gore Range. At sunrise, soft golden light would wash over the mountains, giving life to the winter landscape. Capturing this area and these moments was pivotal in my journey of becoming a landscape photographer.
